It has a mohs' hardness of 7 and doesn’t scratch easily so can be worn daily.

The most important deposits are found in Brazil, Madagascar, Russia and Arizona in the USA.
The violet color in Amethyst is attributed to certain iron constituents in connection with natural radioactive radiation.
When heat treated between 470 – 750 degrees C, Amethyst produces light yellow, green, red-brown or colorless varieties.

For thousands of years, the amethyst has been prized jewel by both loyalty and commoners alike. Its’ seductive violet hues have beckoned to us all from the extravagant pendants and scepters of rulers to the subtle engagement rings of brides in waiting.
In the Bible, Moses describes it as part of the priestly breastplate representing the 12 tribes of Israel.

It has since been quite popular in the ornaments of the Catholic clergy over the centuries as it was thought to put the wearer in a chaste frame of mind and symbolize piety & trust.
It was the stone of bishops and cardinals; we find it in prelates' crosses and in the so-called Papal Ring (Italian, 15th century) in the Jewelery Museum in Pforzheim.
